2019-2020 Bell Schedule Change

The San Rafael High School administration, in collaboration with the District and Education Services team, has decided to make a change to San Rafael High School's bell schedule for next year.   After many months of discussion with staff, parents, and students, we are moving to the following schedule below:

Day of Week

Type of Day

Let Out Time

B Day

A Day

1-3 & Adv

B Day

A Day

1-3 & Adv

* 0 Period Every Day

The new schedule has the following advantages:

  • There is a consistent start and end time.  MWF school starts at 8am and ends at 2:45pm.  T and Th, school starts at 8am and ends at 3:30pm.  Start and end times will vary depending on individual student schedules.  We will do our best to optimize start times for freshmen and sophomores to be scheduled 1-6 or 1-7 with no free periods 3rd or 6th periods.  Juniors and seniors will have much more flexibility.
  • Having days with consistent start and end times to facilitate:
    • Securing tutors during and after school (for in school programs like AVID and after school in the Library)
    • Coordinating the time of college access and mental health community partners working with students during and after school
    • Easier access to College of Marin courses for juniors and/or seniors to facilitate dual enrollment
    • Ease in the ability of students, parents and staff to plan meetings, events, and manage time efficiently
    • Upperclassmen with job responsibilities can also plan their schedules with predictability.
  • In addition, every student is guaranteed classes three times a week.
  • There will be no disruption to extended block scheduling for specialized programs, like the Media or Engineering Academies.

It should be noted that students have expressed concerns about homework and teaching on the traditional days which have been communicated to teachers by the school administration.  Departments are discussing different approaches to modifying their practice for the shorter periods and homework due on Mondays.
